This message was preached at Kanata Baptist Church August 5th, 2019. Well today, I’d like to share with you something we should never forget. It’s profound, but we seem to easily lose sight of it. It is the “Full Affection of God.” Let me give you an example from the schoolyard. How many of you remember picking teams for a game.. say baseball. What inevitably happened? Yes, the quickest, best hitters, great fielders were chosen first. Then who? Yes the ones who weren’t quite as good. Finally the ones who weren’t as skilled. Then finally the last one chosen. What would it feel like to be the last one chosen? A sad, sad day in Mudsville. But, have you noticed that it isn’t just the schoolyard that does the choosing? We get “graded” on almost everything now. What must I do to stop climbing the ladder to success/significance?
I’m going to share from the book of Ephesians Chapter 1 how we can feel accepted, loved and special. How we can feel the “Full Affection of God?”
Introduction – Every Spiritual Blessing in Christ. Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.
Big Idea: God Pre-Planned To Fully Love You And Bless You In Christ
I. Appointed to Holiness in Love
Ephesians 1:4 He (the Father) chose us in Him (Jesus) before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love. Our Father chose us, He appointed us, before the foundation of the world. Before this world was created, God knew you would come to Christ and He appointed you to be blameless and holy. All of this was done in His love. You see He knows us intimately yet He still loves us. It makes Him love us more.
II. Adopted by the Pleasure of His Will
Ephesians 1:5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will. We are adopted by the good pleasure of His will. God is delighted to have us adopted into his spiritual family. Lets think about predestined. Predestined does not mean predetermined. This verse is saying that God pre-planned to have us, all of us adopted into His spiritual family in Christ. God pre-planned it.
III. Accepted by His Glorious Grace
Ephesians 1:6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. Father made us accepted in the beloved. Who is the beloved? Yes Jesus, His beloved Son. The Greek word Charitoo or Accepted here means to be indued with special honor, or to be highly favored. It is from the Greek word for grace, Charis. It literally means You are the highly favored one.
Conclusion
Well, many of us have been chosen last for something, or didn’t get the scores, rank, or status we had wanted. We can all feel unacceptable, rejected, like we don’t measure up. Isn’t this section of Ephesians 1 a blessing? Here we see that we are Appointed, Adopted and Accepted by God is Jesus.
Big Idea: God Pre-Planned To Fully Love You And Bless You In Christ
This is so huge. Paul goes on for 9 more verses extolling the greatness and goodness of God in doing this. But, even more he gives us a key to how to appropriate the Full Affection of God for ourselves. He gives us a prayer a few verses later. The first of 2 great prayers in Ephesians. Ephesians 1:17-18 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[f] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people.
Today, I pray that “the eyes of your heart be enlightened to know Him and the hope we have in Christ.” This is the glorious inheritance of us, His holy people, to remember and celebrate his blessings together.
